que bonita

Though we live on a busy road (tear), our house backs up to a series of lakes that brings lots of nature to our back yard! We've enjoyed getting to know our backyard friends this Winter (that feels like Spring).
Yay for my new bird feeder. We've been wanting one since moved to our first house- oh 2.5 years ago. So this is big. We set up the feeder Matt got me for Christmas and the cardinals are loving it. Well-- loving the food, and watching skeptically, as they have to fight the squirrels for the seed. We'll have to tackle that problem next- but for now, our kitties equally enjoy watching the birds AND squirrels, so purpose served.

The owls have been the most amazing. It started back in December. We would hear what seems to be two owls, hooting back and forth with each other. Then I saw the silhouette of one fly across the backyard during one afternoon-- with a mouse in his talons! They have been so close and loud that I've even been woken up at night by the hoots. In January their sounds changed to a combo of hoots and squaks- which through research could be mating calls or territorial warnings. Not sure which was going on, but either way, they are very passionate about what they were saying!

These are OUR owls! We didn't consult National Geographic.
Matt took the photos himself. Thanks Matt + Canon Rebel T3i.
I think the top one is the female and below is the male.
